Airbnb hosts and guests generated an economic activity of 1 billion euros in Portugal in 2016

Today we are releasing new data that shows the impact Airbnb is having on the Portuguese economy (Download the report). In 2016, the Airbnb community generated €1,070 million of economic activity in the country. Economic activity includes the money earned by hosts and the guest spending in local businesses.

Local households in Portugal earned €166 million last year sharing their home, while the 1.6 million guests that arrived to the country spent a total of €904 million.

  • The number of Portuguese using Airbnb to explore the world doubled, reaching 264,000 last year.
  • The average Airbnb host typically earns an additional €3,600 by sharing their place for 39 nights a year.
  • There are now more than 53,000 homes listed on Airbnb in Portugal.
